Surgery unclude many types of procedures either to diagnose cancer, determine the extension of the disease, and for treatment
- The type of surgery that may be used for diagnosis is called biopsy, which means that a surgeon will take some tissue samples from the suspected cancer area
- Then, the sample will be immediately sent for examination by a specialist in a dedicated laboratory
- A positive biopsy indicates the presence of cancer. On the other hand a negative biopsy may indicate that no cancer is present in the sample
- When surgery is indicated for treatment, the procedure will associate the removal of the entire cancer area as well as parts of adjacent tissue
- Thus,all additional information obtained during surgery will help to predict likelihood of cancer recurrence and whether other treatments have to be considered modalities will be necessary
